If you're wearing gloves and a helmet, you've got 2 essentials covered. The third coverage you should consider is insurance. Your membership automatically enrols you as a member of MTBA, which covers your insurance when you’re involved in organised events such as races and social rides.
It can be an expensive hobby. Of course you'll save a lot of money on day licences by becoming a menber. In addition, most specialist bike shops in the ACT will give a 5% to 10% discount on parts to CORC members on presentation of their rider's licence.
How to Join

Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC) is the largest mountain bike club in Australia. Currently, membership stands at over 750 members. CORC was established in 1988 and affiliated with Mountain Bike Australia in 1999 as an MTBA Foundation Club. The CORC membership base also covers nearby regions such as regional NSW and northern Victoria.
CORC offers a variety of competitive and social activities for riders of all ages and abilities. Being part of CORC is a great way to meet fellow riders, improve your riding skills and support mountain bike trail access in the ACT.
Junior Development

CORC is very supportive of junior riders and has an active junior rider development program. CORC conducts the ACT Schools mountain bike championships for the ACT Secondary Schools Sports Association. As part of the club's junior rider development program, this is a totally free activity (even a free lunch!) for the school children. In 2007, over 300 students took part.
CORC also conducts several junior rider training days throughout each calendar year. Keep an eye on the club website for details.
Women's Development

In addition to the Women's Social Rides and the Women's Camps, CORC owns 3 front suspension bikes which are available for loan if you or your friends would like to have a go at Mountain Biking.
Women's Camps
CORC operates womens-specific training camps each year. Typically, the camps run from 5 pm Friday to 4pm Sunday, operating out of the Birrigai Outdoor Recreational Camp. The cost for the camp includes bunk style accommodation, all catering, seminars on nutrition seminar and stretching, a massage, bike set up and maintenance and skilled coaching by experienced coaches.
The coaching sessions are in groups of around 10 with two coaches per group and are catered to the level of the rider. These camps are aimed at women wishing to start mountain biking as well as those who have been doing it for a while but wish to refine their skills.

Club Racing
CORC offer the opportunity for members to compete at both downhill (DH) and cross-country (XC) racing at local and national events. The Club typically runs a Winter and Summer Series in both DH and XC. A point score run for each category during the series, the the top three places receiving prizes or medals or both for the series.

During daylight saving, CORC runs a series of dirt crit races every Thursday night. These short, sharp races are great fun, a very exciting race for spectators, and are a great way to hone your bike skills. Night crits start in winter and are held every 2 weeks.

Races are organised into several categories each offering different distances and levels of competition.

The Australian 24hr Mountain Bike Championships
CORC is the home of the Australian 24hr Mountain Bike Championships. This annual started in 1999 at Stromlo Forest. Post the 2003 Canberra fires it was moved to and Kowen Forest. In 2007 the race returned home to the new Stromlo Stomlo Forest Park. The race is held in the second weekend in October.

In 1999, the Mont was the first 24Hr in Australia with 178 riders. In 2005, there were 2445 riders, and entries filled in under 1 week. Riders can enter as solo or teams of 2, 3, 4 or 6. Schools teams can enter in teams of 8. The Corporate teams category, nominally of 10 riders, was introduced by CORC. It allows teams to race as 10 riders, or split their entry into smaller teams.
Entry is open to solo riders aged over 18 or over 14 for riders in teams, with consideration given to team riders aged 12 or 13 based on racing history.
Insurance
Part of the membership fee is an insurance component which covers public liability - any time the rider is on their bike.
