CORC Junior Coaching Program

What is it?

The CORC Junior Coaching Program is back again for 2010. Once again it is run by Canberra Off-Road Cyclists aimed to get young people involved in the sport of cycling and mountain biking.

It is aimed to provide a quality MTB coaching experience for children and young people in Canberra

with a focus on fun in a non competitive environment.

Each session will include skills training and trail rides on a variety of terrain depending on the group’s ability. Group sizes will be approximatly 8 riders to one instructor. The program is limited to 50 positions this term.

Who can participate?

The program is open to riders between the ages of 10 and 15. Children outside of this age range may be considered depending on their experience. Children must be able to ride a bike to participate!

Groups will cater for a range of abilities from beginners to more experienced riders.

Children do not need to be CORC members to participate (but it is cheaper!)

The program is open to girls and boys with the potential for boys, girls and mixed groups (depending upon numbers and experience of the riders).

When is it?

The program will commence Thursday 4 Febuary and run each thursday til 1st April (no seriously). There will be no session on the 11th Febuary due to coaches being away at a National round. This gives a total of 8 sessions.

The sessions will start at 6PM (be there ready to ride) and finish at 8 PM (please be there ready to pick your kids up by 8) – it’s the perfect time for you to go out for a ride too!

Where is it?

The program will be run at Stromlo Forest Park which provides access to a huge range of Mountain Bike terrain.

How much does it cost?

The cost for CORC members is $80 (that’s $10 per session!) and covers paying the coaches and any other costs of running the program. Note the participant must be the club member not the parent!)

The cost for Non-CORC Members $120 (note the extra fee covers insurance)

Full fees are payable on the first night of the program. CORC will not provide refunds based on you changing your mind or bad weather (see weather section)

What equipment do my children need?

All participants will need a safe functional mountain bike capable of handling off road riding

you don’t need an expensive high tech bike

it must be suitable to go mountain biking (gears are a good idea as we will be going up hills) and

it must be appropriately maintained (brakes need to work, tires need tread etc). If you are in doubt go to your local bike shop and get the bike checked/serviced. If the instructors deem a bike unsafe bike children will not be allowed to participate in the session

. An Australian Standards approved bike helmet

must be worn at all times. It must be appropriate for the activity, a proper fit and in good condition.

A water bottle or camelbak style hydration pack. These rides are in summer so all riders must carry water with them. If bike mounted make sure it is secure and not going to fall off over every bump. Water is a safety issue so no water no riding.

A spare tube to fit your bike.. We often get flats, don't have time for patches and it can be a long walk back. If you don't have quick release wheels bringing appropriate spanners is a good idea as the coaches don't carry large toolkits.

Knee, shin and elbow pads are optional but do help in crashes so if you have them wear them no one will pick on you

For Downhill or 4X (Four Cross) riding

Only experienced riders with appropriate skills will be allowed to participate in this group

Appropriate gear is required

A full face helmet and

Knee, shin and elbow pads and other armour as appropriate.

We recommend that riders also bring an open face for general skills practice and trail rides as full face can be rather hot.

Who are the coaches?

CORC is lucky to have a number of highly experienced riders and excellent coaches. Many of these are top level competitors some at world cup level. A number of the coaches have formal qualifications and CORC is working towards gaining certification for all coaches.

What if it rains?

CORC reserve the right to cancel the training at any time and training may be cancelled due to fire, storm, rain, inclement weather, wind, forest closure, or any other circumstances. We will however attempt to run the program in all weather conditions. Be prepared to be handed back wet muddy (but happy) children from time to time!

If we miss a session we will attempt to run a weekend session of some description as a make up.

We will decide on the night at 6pm if it is on or not. If in doubt feel free to decide not to come but if you call asking you will be told we will decide on site at 6 :)

What about safety?

Mountain Biking can be a dangerous activity. Even rather minor crashes, can cause injury. CORC will make every effort to keep the activities safe and to keep the training at a level suitable for all participants. As parents of guardians you will be required to sign a waiver prior to your child being able to participate in the sessions.
