CORC Goes West
Thursday, December 1, 2011
The CORC gang headed west for the first round of the MTBA 2011/12
National Series in Perth on the weekend of 19 and 20 November. This was the new All-Mountain Cup
format for XC, with XCO XC Eliminator and Super D results all contributing to
the overall weekend.
It turned out pretty well for the club – with three 1st place results from the weekend – Andy Blair won Elite Men, John Henderson won Super Masters Men and Hamish Prosser won Under 17 Men. Ben Henderson came in 4th in Elite Men – the same place that Rosie Barnes got in Elite Women, while Andrew Remely came 5th in Masters Men.
Being on the other side of the continent did not stop a strong and enthusiastic group of CORC juniors from making the trip. With the aid of cheap flights, and some relatives and friends to stay with eight juniors made trip, easily the largest group of interstate juniors.
The weekend had perfect weather, some fun courses and a whole weekend of riding with the new format of three events over the two days all contributing as stages to the overall result. The XC course was fun, not too challenging, and kept the heart pumping fast the whole way. The XC Eliminator started with doubles and berms and finished with a lung busting leg screaming climb to hold your position. By Sunday afternoon everyone was hot, tired and subdued but a fast super D soon had everyone pumped up and buzzing again.
So how did our Juniors go? In U19 men, Ben Comfort was super strong all weekend and got a well deserved 3rd place. Watch out for him this series. Cameron Prosser powered through the last lap of the XC to get 5th and then held that position through the weekend. Tony Stewart was a solid 6th finishing with a hot Super D time for 2nd on that stage. Jordan Butler had a big smile on his face all weekend and was not intimidated by his first U19 national round finishing in 10th place overall. But where was Jack Lavis? He got all his bad luck out of the way in the first round, falling ill on Saturday and then crashing while practicing on Sunday, but only after a good showing in the eliminator. Kyna Millan showed great courage to finish all races despite being sick and secured 3rd in U19 women while sister Gabi was 2nd behind the local girl un U15 women. Finally Hamish Prosser won a tight U17 men tussle with a couple of strong local boys. This was the closest race of the whole weekend, and would have kept the crowd on the edge of their seats - if there had been any seats...
The juniors were very grateful for the support shown by the other CORC members Andy Blair, Rosie Barnes, Andrew Remely and the Hendersons. Russ Baker was there as MTBA President and resident snaparazzi. You can check out half a dozen albums of photos from the weekend here. Can’t believe it’s almost two months until the next round at Mt Buller. From what I have heard there will be an even stronger group of juniors there.
Full results are on the MTBA National Series website.
XC 5 Orchard Road Kowen Results
Tuesday, November 29, 2011
Huge thanks to Paul & Sherie Cole for putting on a spectacular course for our return to Sunday morning racing. It didn't look like it was going to happen with the rain we'd had in the days and morning leading up to the start, yet the riders coming through timing had very little mud on them and only big smiles.
Results are now available at http://new.corc.asn.au/cms/uploads/events/xc5_orchard_rd_27nov11.pdf
Thanks also to the volunteers who turned up to assist, always much appreciated by everyone.
Any queries with these, please contact me at xc@corc.asn.au

Sunny Thredbo DH Results
Monday, November 28, 2011
Ahh Thredbo, bloody miserable one day, perfect the next.
There were some very wet and muddy people after practice on Saturday.
And when it was still raining on Sunday morning it wasn't looking good. But Sunday's rain was
short lived, the sun shone, the track dried out and every one had a good time. Just like all fairy trails.
Of course the event was a great success - thanks to our dependable band of helpers. Steve Bullard was the
standout. Rumour has it an admirer suggested he looked "really hot" in his jeans as he strutted his stuff on the mountain:)
A big thanks for South East MTB Co for enabling the event but an extra special thanks for Matt, who put his best foot forward and provided the entertainment for the weekend. They wont be easy shoes to fill at the next event.
And it is with great sorrow that we farewell Ricky Lee from Down Hill. Apparently Thredbo was his last race - and it's all Timmy's fault.
A great event, thanks to those who helped out and we will see you all at the next one.

2012 CORC GRAVITY RACE CALENDAR
Thursday, October 27, 2011
Here it is folks, the 2012 Gravity Race Calendar!
You’ll notice a few initiatives in this calendar which have been introduced by CORC with the objective of increasing participation in and introducing new riders to gravity events without riders necessarily having to have all the downhill equipment. Where possible we’ve scheduled events so that they do not conflict with other CORC, NSW and National events.
Under the CORC “Gravity” banner in 2012 we will have:
- A Gravity XC Series of 4 races,
- A Downhill Series of 6 rounds including a Dual Slalom, and
- An ACT Championships consisting of Downhill, Dual Slalom & Gravity XC over a weekend.
| Date | Event | Location |
| 11 March | Gravity XC Round 1 | Kowen |
| 31 March - 1 April | ACT Gravity Championships (Down Hill, Dual Slalom & Gravity XC) | Stromlo |
| 20 May | Down Hill Round 1 | Blue Range (TBC) |
| 17 June | Gravity XC Round 2 | Stromlo |
| 15 July | Down Hill Round 2 | Kowen |
| 12 August | Down Hill Round 3 | Isaacs |
| September | ACT Schools Championships | Stromlo |
| 16 September | Gravity XC Round 3 | Kowen |
| 28 October | Down Hill Round 4 | Majura |
| 24 November | Down Hill Round 5 | Thredbo |
| 2 December | Gravity XC Round 4 | Majura |
| 16 December | Down Hill Round 6 (Dual Slalom) | Stromlo |
You’ll notice the inclusion of Blue Range as a location for a couple of Downhill rounds. Holding these rounds at Blue Range is dependent on gaining approval and building a safe track out there. We will be working with ACT Parks & Conservation over the summer to achieve this. Once we have approval, be prepared for a number of build days!

RIDE 365 Gravity XC results are up
Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Another great race!
A big thanks to Ryan and Ride 365 for all the prizes that were handed out. Next time though we might ask Ryan not to take out the event. It's not a good look when the sponsor wins the event :)
The posted results are for all runs, I will post overall results in the next day or so.
We were intending to run full categories for this event but the info wasn't captured at rego time so we are unable to reliably present category winners - next time.
Of course a big thanks to all the helpers and especialy those XC people who were first on deck to make sure it all went smoothly.
Just a quick note about next years planned series...
The series will be based around 3 tracks at Kowen (Sparrows) and 3 at Stromlo, we will be running full categories and points will be awarded for each race as per other race series. The Caroline McKinlay Gravity XC will continue and the winners of this event will have their names etched on the Huge perpetual trophy.
